This one day intensive course is aimed at both teachers and senior managers and examines theory, policy and, most importantly, classroom practice for the effective teaching of young male learners. The course provides a clear insight into the factors that influence a boy’s behaviour and learning in the classroom and provides a wealth of easy to adopt and adapt strategies for primary teachers. The day is led by Trevor Hawes, one of the UK’s leading experts on the young learning brain and is supported by Debbie Belsher, an expert practitioner. It draws upon the latest educational and neuro-scientific research as well as the findings of UK based case studies and action research projects to raise boys’ achievements. The course has a number of clear themes: Understanding the Young Male Brain: Drawing upon statistics on educational achievement (National SATs, exclusion rates, incidence of ADHD etc) as well as the latest neuro-scientific research on the chemical composition and structure of the young male brain and how this impacts upon learning and behaviour. Whole School and Classroom Issues: This session examines a number of issues from behaviour policies, expectations, involving dads in reading and writing through to DfES initiatives such as Healthy Schools and Every Child Matters. Boy Friendly Lessons: Clear practical guidance is provided in how to run classrooms and plan and deliver lessons that motivate the “average” boy learner and enable him to learn effectively. Developing Boys Literacy Skills: This sessions consider the factors that motivate boys to successfully learn to read, write, speak and listen. The findings of a number of successful action research projects and case studies are presented.
