The DCSF increasingly recognise the importance of building learning power and developing emotional intelligence. Excellence and Enjoyment 2003 aims to: “help children to develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners…provide opportunities for all children to fulfil their potential…provide teaching that meets the needs of children as learners” The Every Child Matters agenda aims to ensure that every child gets to see and realise their potential: “be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution, achieve economic well-being” 2020 Vision, the Gilbert Review recommends that all schools develop: “an explicit focus on learning how to learn…where pupils take ownership of their learning” “personalising learning requires an understanding of how children learn and develop…engaging pupils as active participants in learning” The Optimal Learning Group have created two Brain Boxes, one for Foundation and Key Stage 1 (4 to 6 years olds) and another for Key Stage 2 (7 to 11 years old) which will help pupils, teachers and parents understand about the young learning brain and its needs, to ensure that every child DOES meet their full potential.
