Why choose The Gambia?
|
It’s a GREAT country and provides many opportunities for UK children to learn about Africa and compare and contrast another culture and way of life. The Gambia faces many of the earth’s key 21st Century challenges including poverty, climate change, deforestation and population growth. English is the official language and it’s on the same time zone!

The Country
The smallest African country, with a population of 1.5m. A former British Colony, it is now a safe and stable republic with a rich history which includes slavery and Alex Haley’s “Roots”. The climate is sub-tropical, with a hot rainy summer and dry winter which supports a rich animal, bird and plant life. The economy is undeveloped with 85 per cent of people involved in farming. Life is simple and basic with the average daily wage less than 50 dalasi (a pound a day). |
| |
The People
The Gambian population is made up of several tribes, each with it’s own language (including Mandinka, Wooluf and Fuller). The people are friendly and welcoming. Approximately 85% of the population are Muslim but there is a strong Christian section and a number of Rastafarians. |

The Way of Life
The way of life is very different. Childhood is simple but happy, resources are few and nothing is wasted and almost everything is hand made.
